Antique Late 1800s Black Forest Pipe with Hand Carved Deer and Stag Sculptures
About the Item
All handcrafted gentleman's or hunter's pipe from circa 1890.
For the collectors of antique Black Forest carvings in general and of rare pipes in particular, we also have this Swiss made work of beauty. The Black Forest stag and leaf motifs are all hand carved out of solid nutwood. Other nature or wildlife related materials are the staghorn parts on both ends of the hand-knotted rope decoration. The mouthpiece we believe could be goathorn. All the materials used in this Black Forest antique were from the area, so no illegal materials were ever used and incorporated in these stylish antiques. Although this clearly is a work of art, this unique pipe with the striking stag head sculpture at the bottom was not only created for a decorative purpose. It was definitely made to be used and enjoyed. And judging from the beautiful pipe tobacco smell and the minor nibbling on the mouthpiece, it has been. Apart from a missing lid on the tobacco holder itself this piece is all original and in very good condition. It has a beautiful patina and this will make a great addition to someone's collection.
