About the Item

Provenance: with paper labels for the Zimmerman Collection and Art Trading Ltd. This exceptional pearlware pottery figure of a saddled horse is charmingly rendered. The hand-painted blue and yellow saddlecloth and orange halter highlight the horse's beautiful mottled gray coloring, which was applied to the body with a sponge. Dimensions: 5.75 inches tall x 6.75 inches long x 2.75 inches wide Condition: Excellent Price: $3800 Similar horses in this model are known to be marked with an impressed St. Anthony mark. Reference: Prattware 1780-1840, John & Griselda Lewis, page 100 for a similar marked model. The bottom of the base shows patch marks where the piece was cut from the kiln. Sponging was a traditional English type of decoration for pottery horses in the early 19th century.
