Art Deco Bronze Sculpture Greyhound / Whippet by Irénée Rochard

About the Item

A large sculpture of a greyhound / whippet. The sculpture is made of dark green patinated bronze. On a belgian black marble plinth. The statue is signed on the plinth: Rochard. It is a thin, clear and beautiful signature. The statue is made in France, dating from circa 1930. The dog has an elegant posture and beautiful stylized shapes, typical for the Art Deco Period. Irénée Rochard was born in Villefranche sur Saône France in 1906, in a family of artists: his mother was a painter and his brother became The actor-singer Armand Mestral. When he choose the course of an artist’s life too, he soon turned to animal Sculpting in order to, as he used to say: pay tribute to animals. In 22 years, on leaving the Beaux-Arts School, he was the first prize-winner for A life-Size panther. Many other distinctions followed, all along his career. Between the two world wars, he frequently met with the circles of animal Sculpture artists, mainly with François POMPOM and Marcel Edouard Sandoz. He expressed his talents through bronze. He constantly used to give a manner of intelligence to his animals, to bring out their personality and gentleness. Creation of horses, monkeys, gazelles, elephants, panthers, ducks, bisons, pelicans, dromedaries, dogs, ectera. His modern workmanship gives them the typical suppleness and gracefulness of their shapes. .
