About the Item
Amazing sculpture in patinated bronze terracotta, "Lioness with her lions" by Antoine Amorgasti, born in 1880 in Pisa and died in Antwerp, Belgium in 1942. He studied sculpture at the Academy of Berchem and Antwerp in the studio of Josue Dupon.
He is well known and valued for the sculptures of animals in bronze and patinated terracotta as if it were bronze, as is the case at hand, this sculpture is in patinated terracotta in greens and browns that simulate bronze. It represents a Lioness with her cubs, of great naturalism and artistic emotion.
The piece is signed, numbered and with DEPOSE written on it.

Masson was a pupil of the famous French animal bronzier, Antoine-Louis Barye. He exhibited in the Paris Salon (Salon des Beaux Arts) in 1867 – 1881. More than 50 pieces of sculpture were exhibited by Masson thru 1909. Examples of his sculptures can be found in the Municipal Museum in Nimes. In early 1907, King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, known as Rama V, decided to erect a monument to his glory on a vast empty esplanade on which the parliament would soon stand (not to be completed until 1915). Rama V sailed for Europe in 1907. Chulalongkorn had the idea early on to erect an equestrian statue. His visit to the Palace of Versailles in the spring of 1907 finally convinced him. Like that of Louis XIV, whose statue is in the main courtyard of the castle, Rama V would also leave his mark in Bangkok with his equestrian statue.
