"Fantail Pigeon, " Rare Dusty Pink Art Deco Sculpture with Painted Base, Gregory

About the Item

A rare and beautiful example of the porcelain sculptures of Waylande Gregory, this depiction of a fantail pigeon in deep, dusty pink and white dates to the 1940s or 1950s. Gregory was prodigious and indefatigable over a long career. Gregory produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. One remarkable example is a fountain sculpture -- "Light Dispelling Darkness" -- in Roosevelt Park in Edison, New Jersey, which has recently been restored. This sculpture retains its wood base, hand painted by Gregory, which is a rare feature in his work.

  • Rare Art Deco Bookends, Indian Sculptures in Meditating Position on Marble Base
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique on 1stdibs and possibly worldwide. It was in the early 20th century that meditation became known in Western society. Like many artists, the one who handcrafted the sculptures that were used to create these bookends probably traveled through Indonesia or India. These creative minds came back full of inspiration of all they had witnessed, because certainly back then, they entered a whole new world. The meditating males on these marble based bookends are made of silvered brass and the artist perfectly captured their serene faces, their turban head wear and their relaxed bodies. Sitting with their minds at rest and with their consciousness in the entire body or possibly focussed on breathing only, they would certainly arouse interest with western travelers...
