Finely Chiseled Japanese Bronze Okimono Sculpture of Standing Ram Sheep

About the Item

JAPANESE SCHOOL Early 20th century Okimono of a Standing Ram Patinated bronze signed illegibly to the underside Item # 306VSG19P A very finely chiseled Japanese okimono, this fine bronze sculpture of a Standing Ram showcases a high level of skill not only in the casting process but in the exceedingly good finishing work. The underlying surface texture glows under the translucent reddish-brown patina while the intricate layering of hair is achieved largely by hand: chiseling and engraving the surface, hand-hammering elements and working slowly to bring details to life. The model is signed on the belly with an illegible scrolling mark. Measurements: 11 1/4" W x 9 1/2" H x 5" D Condition Report: Trace wear to the patina, including to the tip of the ears, the outer edge horns, spots in the face. Cleaned, waxed and polished, a fine presentation. "HARVESTER" AFTER A MODEL BY MATHURIN MOREAU (FRENCH, 1822-1912) In a reddish-brown and golden patinated bronze; signed in base "Math. Moreau" Item # 012SKP14W A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau". It is a complex model and a fine accomplishment for the foundry, the joints seamlessly flowing into one another without any obvious connections. The surface is chiseled with great care, resulting in fine detailing of the toes and fingers to include the wrinkles at each joint and texturing of the nails, crisp eyelids and flawless skin, gorgeous texturing of the garment...
