Italian Majolica Midcentury Terracotta Glazed Roaring Seated Lion Sculpture
About the Item
A truly fierce Italian midcentury representation of the King of the Jungle. This Leo made from sculpted and hand formed terra cotta with a hand painted and glazed finish is ready to roar into your life. But you may be asking yourself, 'why is there so much amazing terracotta coming from Italy?' I asked myself (and the internet) the same question. I came up with this from the forno bravo website, "The manufacturing of terracotta in Impruneta dates back to the first Etruscan settlements in Tuscany (named after the Etruscans) in roughly 800BC, or roughly 3,000 years ago. The first association of “mezzinai” (terracotta jar makers) was incorporated in 1308, near the modern neighborhood of Pieve di Santa Maria in Impruneta. During the Renaissance, numerous artists set up workshops in Impruneta, including Brunelleschi, Donatello and Andrea del Verrocchio. The tiles that cover the top of the Duomo in Florence were made in Impruneta. The famous Della Robbia family build and operated their own furnace to make many of the masterpieces found throughout Italy. In the following 500 years, production in Impruneta has gone on to include sculptures, statues, columns, coats of arms, and various architectural ornaments and tiles, making it the true center of the terracotta Community." Fascinating stuff to be sure! This lion embodies all that is fierce. I can't see too much amiss with this sculpture, maybe a nick or two here or there but overall not too shabby for over a half of a century. Roar!

- James Schwabe Sterling Silver and Gemstone Lion Sculpture Mounted on MalachiteLocated in Atlanta, GAA sterling silver sculpted lion by late American artist James Schwabe (1918 - 2008) mounted onto malachite. The eyes of the lion are gemstone (possibly cabochon emerald) and there appear to be highlights in a golden metal. The sculpture is signed on the malachite, J. Schwabe and there looks to be a number under the signature. It has been postulated that Mr. Schwabe sold his jewelry in New York under the brand, Patrice and Realm. Mr. Schwabe did design jewelry and other pieces in precious metals and gemstones for Cartier. This sculpture depicts a fierce and cute lion, seated on its haunches with its green eyes wide open. The lion sits patiently on a block of malachite, enjoying a polished surface contrasted with the natural form. So if you still have a curio cabinet, then make some room on the top shelf for this work.
