Japanese Antique Wooden Lion Mask Engraving Edo Period/1603-1868/Shrine Festival
About the Item
This is a very old Japanese "si-si" mask made in the middle to late Edo period.
(Japanese ``si-si'' is an imaginary animal that deifies a lion.)
It is thought that materials such as cypress are used.
This mask has been a tool used during festivals at shrines since ancient times.
As for how to use it, humans dance with this "si-si" mask on.
Originally, the mask of ``si-si'' is made by inserting hemp or animal feathers into the top of ``si-si'', wearing it on the head, and hanging a drum from the chest and beating it, Butoh dancers went around the village and danced.
It is used to bring good luck and ward off disasters in the home, and to pray to the gods for a bountiful harvest and the prosperity of descendants.
This piece is simply engraved.
There are a wide variety of designs, including ones with simple designs like this one.
The production date is the Edo period (17th century to 19th century).
In addition, the condition of the item is that a wooden shaft would originally have been used for the base of the lower five and Japanese words, but that was lost and iron wire and cloth were used instead.
And the cracked jaw has been glued back together.
Also, since the same old "si-si" mask from the Edo period was published in Shishi's art book, I will post it here.
This is a rare design that is hard to see.
How about displaying one in your home as a talisman.
Also, I want many people to know the goodness of antiques, so I set the price reasonably.
Weight: 803g.
