Large Antique Hand Carved Painted Stag Sculpture
About the Item
A charming and whimsical vintage hand carved stag sculpture in wood, with original distressed painted white finish, dating to the early 20th century. Exceptionally carved and sculpted from a single log, the solid wooden sculptural figure having no separation except for the removable and adjustable intricately crafted six point antlers and folding ears. Both easily adjust to allow positioning in different locations, such as on a narrow fireplace mantel. Subtle detail throughout, including inset reflective glass eyes, life-like facial features and structure, and rustic, ebonized hoofs.
This wood sculpture of a deer is a realistic rendering of the magnificent, majestic animal. Deer have been the center of literature and art for many cultures across the world. They have also long had a significance to humans, such as hunting for food and clothing, as well as a symbol of spiritual authority and nature.
Simple, elegant and timeless, the carving naturalistic in form, depicting a standing stag deer statue figure, paused at the moment just after a step but still in walking stance, head bowed low, possibly looking to graze, also appears starting to square off, possibly to investigate something further.
This antique folk art sculpture is one of a kind, presents splendidly, with great presence.
