Modern Silver Plate Spoon Giraffe Sculpture by Raul Zuniga for Casa Del Arte

About the Item

Modern silver plate spoon giraffe sculpture by Raul Zuniga for Casa Del Arte, circa 1971. The whimsical piece is made from silver plated spoons and various found household objects of copper. The sculpture is mounted on a 4" x 4" x 1.75" piece of wood painted black. It is signed and dated "1971" on the underside. Zuniga from a 1967 “Design” magazine article about his work: “I wanted to create things…but different things. I always liked the shapes of spoons and forks. They have had a special meaning to me. So I began working with them, and now I can say that I have become a specialist in what you may call ‘spoon sculptures.’ In the beginning people looked suspiciously at my creations. Now I can’t make enough of them! Although most look quite easy to make, I can assure anyone that creating a work of art out of spoons is no simple task!” With a bachelor's in interior design, and a master's in creative design, Zuniga attained senior Industrial designer status with IBM in the 1950s. His commissions read like the Dow Jones List of Blue Chip stocks. He has worked with churches, casinos, architects, important corporations, banks, newspapers, municipalities, galleries and private collectors. #1096.
