A Pair on Antique Limestone Lions, France c.1900

About the Item

This antique pair of tufa limestone garden lions dates to the early 19th century and came from southern France or possibly, Italy. The lions are quite regal in appearance and hold heraldic shields with their paws. Their condition is good for their age, with considerable erosion but only minor losses. The white tufa has aged grey and is now pitted with small holes and cavities. The mottled appearance is enhanced by the presence of dormant moss. Some cement remains attached to the bases.

Dating from the 1850s, this carved limestone antique plaque depicts the head of a lion within hand carved chain links, some of which have been lost through the ages. It is more than 170 years old and likely once formed part of a larger piece together with this matching plaque. Perhaps it was once part of a keystone above an entranceway or a family crest wall decoration in the prestigious courtyard of a large estate. Made from fine grained limestone, it has a weathered finish that only time can create and yet the lion plaque...
