Pre-Columbian Style Nayarit Indian Polychromed Effigy Alligator Pipes

About the Item

This grouping of alligator-like or crocodile effigy antique pipes is both beautiful and intriguing. The wear on the backs and underside of the polychromed pottery suggests handling and use over the decades. The top parts of the instruments are almost completely without the veneer where the musician's or smoker's hands came into repeated contact with the articles. The colors are warm and the design is consistent with Nayarit Indian craftsmanship according to the appraiser. The general condition of the three articles is quite good with only minimal losses to the finish, but no noticeable chips or breaks. Two of the pieces have open mouths, and all have three-pierced holes on the back with a painted black motif. They measure 8 inches long, 3.250 inches wide and 2 inches tall. These came from an estate sale in the South Bay five or so years ago. Interesting and very collectible trio.
