Ceramic Sculpture Franca Head by Vanessa Semaino

About the Item

The “Surolù” art works - this is artistic identity chosen by Vanessa Semaino - arise from the artist 's need to represent women’s condition today, particularly in their emotional states that confer their unique identities. These precious ceramic sculptures, entirely handcrafted and decorated, represent female Moor’s heads. They were conceived as an expression of an introspective journey that relates Vanessa’s Sicilian origins and to her professional experience in the fashion stylistic field. The artist introduces, for the first time, the repeated use of sociological themes of current relevance through a visually immediate language, represented in her art works with a contemporary pop aesthetic. Within the theme of the seven deadly sins, the artist chooses to represent the sin of greed with a work that is truly unique in its originality.”Franca,” the name of the artwork, offers an extraordinary interpretation of this sin through the image of a woman who embodies the ostentation of wealth and attachment to material possessions. The artist found inspiration in Franca Florio, a Sicilian woman of endless beauty, seduction, and elegance, made iconic by her extremely long and precious pearl necklace. In the artwork, created with a half-bust of a Moorish head, Franca is depicted as a contemporary queen because that’s how she felt and appeared to be, with a crown borrowed from the classicism of famous Sicilian heads, adorned with all the opulence represented through the use of golden zecchino. In an era where consumption and wealth are often celebrated and promoted through the media and popular culture, the artwork “Franca” raises important questions about the nature of greed in contemporary society, where the desire to possess and display is often emphasized. However, the provocative portrayal remains entertaining and captivating while still being profound and introspective. The artist chooses to address these themes with irony and lightness, downplaying the provocative content, preferring a representation that inspires immediate sympathy and decorating it with colors that evoke a pop view of contemporary art. The artist introduces, for the first time, the repeated use of sociological themes of current relevance through a visually immediate language, represented in her art works with a contemporary pop aesthetic. “Grimilde” is an artwork that addresses the dilemma of envy within the context of the seven deadly sins, through a representation that merges the wicked characters from fairy tales into a single figure. In it, there are recognizable references to Grimhilde, the witch from “Snow White”, the Queen of Hearts from “Alice in Wonderland,” and Cruella De Vil, all aimed at portraying envy in a world dominated by social media and the constant quest for approval and affirmation. The artwork is named after the evil queen from Snow White, and her figure is made evident by the turban that frames the face, emphasizing its features and wrinkled expression. The dress, with a black and white checkered pattern with red details, evokes that of the Queen of Hearts, as seen in the large red hearts decorating the crown, replacing the traditional acanthus leaves of typical Sicilian Moorish heads...
