Franz Hagenauer Male and Female "The Couple" 1930

About the Item

Franz Hagenauer Male and Female “The Couple” 1930. Rare sculpture highly stylized and unique piece made in Vienna, circa the 1930s. Recently restored in gleaming chrome patina portraying the male and female form. This unique style which can only be recognized as Hagenauer is stamped Wien Made in Austria. This is an exceptional piece in size, design, and artistic rendering. Both pieces, male and female are mounted on a rectangular chrome base as pictured. The Hagenauer firm was founded by Carl Hagenauer in Austria, in 1898. His son Karl became the head of the company in 1928 after having studied with Joseph Hoffman and winning bronze and silver medals at the Paris Exposition of 1925. His work was most prolific, including many “useful objects” such as mirrors, cigar cutters, bookends, and hood ornaments. He produced humorous and playful figures as well as highly stylized ultra-modern sculptures. He managed Hagenauer Werkstatte until he died in 1956. His younger brother, Franz, focused more specifically on sculpture, often drawing from African art as his inspiration. His long life ( 1906-1986 ) provided him with a long career and many of the most elegant Hagenauer pieces can be attributed to Franz. Though both Karl and Franz produced many animal pieces, beautiful female forms were a specialty of Franz’s. Spanish dancers, models, mythical goddesses, and African natives were sources for his design.

  • Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
    By Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien
    Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor, a European Sculpture in the style of Hagenauer made of Ebony wood and Metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, style and materials. They are very rare to find. This one is particularly interesting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with the treatment of black ebony and silver including the navy anchor on its arm obviously inspired by the original Popeye. It’s not a widely known fact that a real person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered was fashioned to resemble this man Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947 and as an adult he joined the navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, all characteristics of the cartoon Popeye which became such an important icon of protection, not allowing bullying or to be bulled. This Popeye Sailor sculpture...

Large Art Deco sculpture of hunter and panther (or lion) by the famous sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus. The Art metal sculpture has a beautiful green verdigris patina and stands on an angled green/white/black multi-color marble base. Excellent condition and inscribed on the base “D.H.Chiparus”! Original bronze spear and patina. Very large in size and would look incredible in your entryway, living room, mantle or buffet, or just about anywhere you have 36 inches wide. Chiparus of course the master sculptor, arguably the most important artist for statues of the Art Deco period. He always had a way of rendering both men and women in a most natural and desirable way. A very important piece, pictured in many books on Art Deco...
