Italian Carrara Marble Bust Augustus Caesar
About the Item
The bust intricately carved from Italian Carrara marble with lifelike features including textured hair and shaped chest. The bust carved as Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Octavius (later Octavian). The bust stands on circular grey marble socle with stepped plinth base and convex body. The Bust dates to the 18th/19th century.
Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Octavius was the heir to Julius Caesar and became emperor in 27BC. Octavian ruled until his death in AD14. He was widely recognised as the architect of the Roman Principate, the initial stage of the Roman Empire, and is renowned as one of the most remarkable leaders in human history. The original marble is in the Vatican collection (Pius Clementinus Museum, Gallery of the Busts) and dates from the first century BC. The bust is finished with extremely high-quality details such as the hair and ears, a true sign of a master sculptor.
Socle a plain low block or plinth serving as a support for a column, urn, statue, etc. or as the foundation of a wall.

We firmly attribute the Austrian Bronze to Franz Bergman and date it to the late 19th century circa 1890. Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronzes with a range of subjects such as oriental, erotic, and animal figures. He was probably the most famous Austrian bronze foundry who is widely recognised for smaller cold painted bronzes with an extremely good attention to detail. Signed often with a ‘B’ or Bergman and a registration mark.
