Late 19th Century Antique Marble Bust Atala Signed A. Piazza Carrara

About the Item

A beautiful marble bust of a young woman Atala, handed carved of white Carrara marble in the 1890s signed A. Piazza, Carrara. Carrara is a city in Italy famous around the would for its white and blue-gray marble quarries used by Michelangelo and many famous artist. In the 19th century, Europeans went crazy for one story: Atala, or the story Two Lovers in the desert, a novel by Rene de Chateaubriand published in 1801. It narrates the story of a mixed-race young couple, a young woman Atala and her lover Chactas, a native American from the Natchez tribe. This story appeared in paintings, sculptures and porcelain a true love story. The bust is in very good condition and a very beautiful piece with a great story.
