'a Loving Mother' Sculpture by Canaan Chikumbirike

About the Item

A beautifully carved wooden sculpture by African artist Canaan Chikumbirike. Signed and dated '11-1-1977' on base. Stands 12 1/2 inches tall. Canaan Chikumbirike was born with his younger twin brother on the 7th of October 1954 to a farming family in rural Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) at the age of five; Canaan attended a nearby primary school for lower primary education. At 10, he went to another school, St. Roberts for upper primary education. All during this period, sculpture, drawing and metal works were becoming into a daily hobby. What evolved from the “hobby” was his artwork starting to be shown at the local agricultural shows. In his various schools, his work was cited by the missionaries who offered any help they could to help Canaan attain more exposure. They helped with marketing and promotion. In 1972, he went to the Driefontein School of Art, where he received his art certificate. After this he attended Mt. St. Mary’s for further education and then finally, in 1975, he left St. Charles Luwangwa Minor Seminary. Since then he became fully involved in the private studies of what would be his life’s work, sculpture. In the later years, he became involved with Rutendeko Carvers where he was the founding member of a group of six artists. In 1980, Canaan, on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe, gave his sculpture of a father and son titled “Natural Love” to the then President of Mozambique, Samora Machel. The father represented Mozambique and the son represented Zimbabwe, this was the expression of his gratitude to the people of Mozambique’s sacrifice for the liberation of the people of Zimbabwe. This sculpture is open to the public during independence celebrations to this day. In the mid-eighties, he donated a sculpture, titled “Love, Will and Devotion” to Mother Teresa, as a gesture of gratitude for the work she was doing. In 1994, he solicited the assistance of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to present, on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe, the bust of Mr. Mandela, titled “Mr. Mandela” during his inauguration as South African president. From 1994 until 2002, Canaan worked alone in a rural area of South Africa. Sadly, Canaan succumbed to AIDS in 2002. His son, Wisdom, survives him.
