Small Hellenistic Parthian Marble Head of a Man, circa 2nd to 1st Century BC

About the Item

A small carved marble head of a man, Parthian Empire, Hellenistic Period, circa 2nd to 1st century BC, modern day Iran. The small marble head carved in the Hellenistic fashion. The man stares out from wide eyes, a solemn and soulful expression on his face. The most notable feature is the treatment of his thick hair, which is gathered and piled in large, flowing locks which swirl and curl around his head. The marble with a beautiful warm and soft, almost buttery, surface patina. Drilled and mounted on a contemporary wooden stand. Measures: Height of head only 4" The Parthian Empire lasted from 247 BC to 224 AD. A major power in the ancient world, they were based in modern day Iran. As part of the Silk Road, they were a melting pot of cultures, blending Hellenistic Greek, Persian, as well as related regional cultures.
