Rare polychrome wooden sculpture depicting Saint Barbara, 15th century, France.
Saint Barbara is a saint venerated in the Christian tradition, known for her history and legend. She is often depicted with a tower, as it is associated with protection from storms and the dangers of explosions. According to tradition, she died a martyr in 306 AD. after being locked up in a tower by her father who did not want her to consecrate herself to God.
Polychrome sculptures were common in past historical eras, as they helped make sacred works of art more accessible and engaging for worshipers.
The 15th century is known as the Late Gothic period in France, characterized by sacred art and extraordinary architecture.
