19th Century Bronze Statue: Le Travail, by Ernest Rancoulet

About the Item

Bronze sculpture with brown patina by Ernest Rancoulet featuring an allegory of work with a young man holding a spear, that symbolizes the triumph of wisdom acquired through work and study. At his feet, several objects refer to literature, arts and sciences: the book is a symbol of knowledge, the caduceus, symbol of the union between heaven and earth, of the awakening of cosmic consciousness, the compass, symbol of sciences, the palette and brushes, symbol of art. Signed on the edge of the book: Rancoulet. Titled on the base: LE TRAVAIL par Rancoulet (Sculpteur), circa 1870 Dimensions: W 13,4 in, D 10.6in, H 28.3in. Dimensions: L 34cm, P 27cm, H 72cm. Literature Ernest Rancoulet (Sorrèze, 1842?-1918?) is a French sculptor, student of Maggesi, author of bronze and terracotta statues featuring fishermen, dancers, allegorical and mythological figures. He presented his sculptures at the Salon from 1870-1876. Several of his works are in French public collections, such as the Musée des beaux-arts in Bordeaux or the Musée de la Chartreuse in Douai.
