Abduction of the Sabine Woman, Bronze, 19th Century, After Giambologna

About the Item

Kidnapping of the Sabine women. Bronze. XIX century, following the model of Giambologna (John of Bologna; Douai, 1529-Florence 1608). Patinated bronze sculpture made with the lost wax casting technique that has a small polygonal base, also dark. The three human figures that make it up are placed on a small rocky surface, thus enhancing the complicated game of diagonals and spirals created by the postures of the two men and the woman, located at the top of the composition. Considered the masterpiece of John of Bologna, the Rape of the Sabine Women is a sculpture made between 1581 and around 1582 that measures 410 cm high, is carved from a single piece of marble and is located in the Loggia della Signoria (Florence , Italy). It shows a young man lifting a woman over his head, who struggles to get away from him, while an old man appears between the boy's legs. It is due to this popularity, apart from its quality, that casts of the work and works inspired by it were made in bronze already at the time the author was still alive, and, of course, of the Grand Tour and destined for everything, to England and Germany, in different sizes (almost always much smaller than the original). A bronze reduction of the work is attributed to the hand of Pietro Tacca, held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; another, dated to the 18th century, is kept in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. · Size: 37x38x114 cms International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.

Very large bronze sculpture with brown patina, based on the group "The Rape of the Sabine Women" by John of Bologna (Giambologna). This pivoting composition shows three figures in motion: a man on the ground defeated with his shield turned upside down, a second one arched clutching a woman launched towards the sky trying to escape, all on a naturalistic base. The Sabine man, the Roman and the Sabine woman are all depicted naked. This staging plays on serpentine lines known as "figura serpentinata" and diagonals giving a beautiful variety of volumes and a multiplicity of angles of view. The bronze is signed F. De Luca...
