"Allegory of Abundance, " Important MGM Movie Prop, Art Deco Sculpture

About the Item

An MGM Studios prop and an important survivor of Hollywood's Golden Age, this piece may be the most ambitious Art Deco sculpture produced by any of America's leading porcelain manufacturers. The sculptor was Geza De Vegh, an important artist and ceramicist who created a line of porcelain pieces for the Lamberton Scammell company in Trenton, New Jersey. Importantly, De Vegh's work was very popular among set designers and art directors in Hollywood. His works are evident in the background of important Bette Davis films such as "The Letter," art directed by Carl Weyl; and "Now Voyager," art directed by Robert Haas. This large allegorical piece depicts a stylized female figure enveloped by a long scroll and flanked by a tree and a barrel.

  • "Shepherd and Shepherdess, " Monumental Art Deco Sculptures, Probably by De Vegh
    By Geza De Vegh
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
Monumental and dignified, this pair of Art Deco sculptures depict a shepherd and shepherdess, crisply shaped and stylized like the best of 1930s public sculpture, and painted in rich but subdued colors with an effect like sun-bleached stucco. It is our estimation that they were sculpted by Geza De Vegh, the Hungarian-American sculptor who created a range of pieces for the Lenox and Lamberton Scammell porcelain works, both in Trenton, New Jersey, as well as a group of rare ceramic pieces for the Phoenix Company. Importantly, De Vegh's work was very popular among set designers and art directors in Hollywood. His works are evident in the background of important Bette Davis films such as "The Letter," art directed by Carl Weyl; and "Now Voyager...

  • Meissen Group 'Allegory Of The Volga' for Catherine II of Russia, Kaendler, 1850
By Meissen Porcelain, Johann Joachim Kaendler
    Located in Vienna, AT
Very rare and excellent porcelain sculpture: Kändler created this group in 1772, right at the beginning of the work on the large order, as a personification of one of the two great main rivers of the vast Russian Empire, the natural waterways Volga and Dnieper, important for economy and traffic, which promised prosperity and wealth to the Empire: The Volga in the form of a river god, seated sideways on heavily relieved fully sculptured rock covered with shells and coins as well as fern and reed plants, fully bearded and crowned with laurel, wrapped in floral patterned purple loincloth. He looks pensively to the side and rests his right arm on an overturned baluster vase, from which water flows together with shells and fish, on the wall of the vase the crowned, rocaille-framed Polish-Lithuanian royal coat of arms with the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. At the same time he touches with his hand an oar with gold ornamentation and crossed red swords, in his left he holds a cornucopia with plastic flowers, ears of grain and coins, symbols of fertility and wealth. The group is based on the front curved plinth with relief gold heightened meander and ribbon border. The design of this group belongs to the models of the 'Great Russian Order...
