Ancient Olmec Greenstone Portrait Mask with Pre-1970 Provenance

About the Item

A large and powerful portrait mask depicting an important Olmec ruler, with a broad face, furrowed brow, rectangular ear flanges, full lips, and a large nose, carved from a variegated green stone with white quartz inclusions, Olmec Culture, Gulf Coast Mexico, Ca. 1150-550 B.C. Provenance; Personal Collection of Ian Arundel, proprietor of the Old Curiosity Shop on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles from the 1960's to the 1980's. Collected in the 1960's, and sold by his son Colin Arundel in 2004. Authentication: Stoetzer Fine Art Services, Miami, Florida.

  • Condition:
    Repaired: A 3/4" x 1/4" hole next to the proper right side of the nose was filled, and several narrow shards were reattached to the back rim. Professional restoration by Stoetzer Fine Art Services of Miami, FL. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Carved from a deep green serpentine with white quartz inclusions. Serpentine tends to separate along the veins, so some sections of the back edges had to be re-attached. The thicker face section is intact except for some interior cracks.
