About the Item
An excellent early 20th century Austrian cold painted bronze lamp of an Arab man selling a highly detailed Oriental carpet, with very fine colour and carefully chased surface detail. The inside fitted with an electrical light, rewired and signed to base with the Bergman ‘B’ in an amphora vase, stamped Geschutzt and numbered.
Franz Bergman Bohemian, 1838-1894 Bergman was born in Gablonz, Northern Bohemia where he worked as a metalwork chaser and finisher. He came to Vienna where he founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son, Franz Xavier Bergman ~ Austrian, 1861-1936, opened a new foundry at the turn of the Century. Bergman bronzes are normally stamped with a capital 'B' placed in a twin handled vase and occasionally inscribed 'Gesch' or 'Geschutzt' referring to the model/design being 'registered' or copyrighted.

His father, also Franz Bergman (1838–1894), was a professional chaser (embosser) from Gablonz, Austria who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. Franz Xavier inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. There he created numerous cold painted (so named because the numerous layers of polychrome paint, applied to the bronze, were not fired to fix them to the metal) figures. Many other bronzes were still based on designs by Franz Bergman, the elder. Orientalist Subjects From the 17th Century onwards it was customary for the young Victorian gentleman to go on the obligatory tour of the East – the Grand Tour – as an educational rite of passage. Visiting countries and experiencing customs they had only ever heard about in stories, these young men were keen to show their families mementos of their experience, especially the lavish subjects of the Middle Eastern Arab world. The return trip would usually include a visit to Vienna, and here the ‘souvenir’ shops supplied a plethora of beautifully crafted sculptures with an Orientalist Arab flavour. These were often acquired to show their friends and families images of their travels.
