Bronze Statue of the Roman Greek Wrestler Milo of Croton After Dumont

About the Item

A fairly large 19th century French bronze statue of the Milo of Croton on a stepped marble base after the original marble statue by sculptor Edme Dumont (1720-1775) displayed in the Louvre. Through the presentation of this particular sculpture, Dumont was in 1768 inducted in the Acedamie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. This bronze is unsigned but the quality of the casting suggests a master. There is a similar version of it in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Milo (or Milon) of Croton was a legendary Greek wrestler from the Greek settlement of Croton in southern Italy. He won the wrestling contest at five successive Olympic Games, and swept the board at all other festivals, a sort of Michael Phelps of antiquity. A man of huge stature, he boasted that no one had ever brought him to his knees. It is said that he carried a live ox upon his shoulders through the stadium at Olympia, then ate it all in a single day. Tradition has it that in his old age, on seeing an oak tree partly split open with a wedge he tried to wrench it apart, but only succeeded in causing the wedge to fall out, thereby trapping his hands. He was left a helpless prey to the wild beast who soon finished him off.

  • A Patinated Bronze Statue of a Seated Greek Scholar signed Moreau
    By Mathurin Moreau
    Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks. Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium. Several of his works remain on public display in Paris, among them on the facade of the Gare du Nord...
