    An extraordinary piece of American sculpture, this depiction of a young woman, dated 1930, was sculpted in white marble by John Gregory -- who executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- for Paul Philippe Cret, who was the Library's architect. Clearly Gregory and Cret were friends as well as colleagues, and this sculpture may have been executed as a gesture of appreciation from Gregory to Cret; indeed, the Library's cornerstone was laid the same year this sculpture was created. Gregory is also known for his "Orpheus" bronze at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and an equestrian sculpture of General Anthony Wayne...
