About the Item

Christ with open arms, with a ribbon on his head that could have been part of a small crown, and dressed in a purity cloth or parazonium down to the knees. The holes of the hands, the one that joins the two feet and the fact of being hollow, evidence the belonging of this small sculpture to another work, to which it would be held with small nails. The Crucified with three nails, typology to which belongs, is popular in the Middle Ages from the Gothic, and was increasingly common until becoming the usual representation until the recovery of the four nails in the Baroque. For the style and material is included within the preserved examples of enamels of Limoges, dated in the thirteenth century. It would be part of a plate or it would have been attached to a cross or to a chest, for example, all these elements decorated according to the champlevé enamel technique with the typical tones of that centre (blue, yellow, green...). Most likely, the figure was overgrown, and the inclination of the head, the lines that mark the anatomy of Jesus, the face and the shape of the arms and feet, among other details such as the iconographic type of Christ already deceased, relate it to the end of the Romanesque (still very present in this work) and the beginning of the Gothic influence (very slight here). Compare this example with the Crucifix on the plate of the Art Institute of Chicago (inventory 1943.79) of circa 1200-1210, one at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (25,120,441) with the enameled purity cloth in the characteristic blue tone of the centre producer, two in the British Museum in London (numbers 1925,0609.1 and 1882,1101.7) or the one in the Cross of the Louvre Museum (OA 9956). The stylistic similarities, in the way of marking the parazonium and the anatomy of Jesus, the posture of the head and feet... show that it was usual to use a model and repeat it in order to make the enamels a little more economically accessible, which helped in large part to the fame and fortune of Limoges, where production had already declined to 1370, when the looting of the area by the English took place. However, towards the end of the 15th century it revived but with the technique of "painted enamel" and clearly Renaissance models. Size: 14 x 15.5 x 1.5 cms.
