Early 19th Century Immaculate Sculpture Silver Plate from Genova

About the Item

Genoa, early 19th century. Immaculate. Silver plate, 30 x 26 cm. The figure of the Virgin victorious over sin is one of the most fortunate Marian images: already widespread in the Renaissance also thanks to German engravings, it spread widely in the 17th century, becoming the official paradigm for the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, ratified as an article of faith. only in 1854 by Pope Pius IX. The pose of the Virgin Mary is graceful and extremely natural; her figure, with a white and delicate face framed by soft hair with a central parting that falls softly on the shoulders, is cloaked in the characteristic dress that wraps her body, with full-bodied and sickle drapery. The typical attributes of this iconography are not lacking: the crescent crescent, with the points pointing downwards, ancient symbol of chastity and reference to the superiority of Our Lady over the changing of destinies and situations, and the serpent, a motif that recalls the words spoken by God to the serpent in Eden (Gen 3, 15) I will place enmity between you and the woman , between your lineage and its lineage: this will crush your head ... In this sentence the medieval theologians saw an announcement of the coming of the New Eve, which would defeat Satan, the serpent. The Immaculate Virgin is supported by three cherub heads at the base of her robe. the snake. The Immaculate Virgin is supported by three cherub heads at the base of her robe. the snake. The silver foil is worked with the embossing technique, for which malleable metals such as brass, tin, gold or silver were usually used. The overhang is achieved by working, with chisels of different shapes and sizes, the internal part of the sheet, lying on a soft surface, so as to allow the progressive deformation of the processed material. In this way, the artist performs the work in "negative", modeling concavities, large or small, in the slab of the material, which will result in relief when the work is completed. The finest details of the design are obtained by working the visible surface with chisels and burins. The final step is to reinforce the foil avoiding the embossed design made from deforming with the next use. According to the nature of the processed material
