About the Item
A rare and unusual studio pottery head sculpted by renowned ceramic artist Eric James Mellon (British, 1925-2014) and dated 1963. Trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in the 1940’s Eric is more renowned for his figurative work, often including nudes decorated with ash glazes. This particular piece is an unusual hand-crafted work in clay and is created as a hollow head white glazed with openings for eyes, mouth and nostrils with black and blue glazed incised hair and to the lips. The head is slightly contorted to the back and has an incised signature Eric Mellon around the inside along with an incised date 1963.
