French 19th Century White Carrara Marble Statue of a Maiden, Signed Moreau

About the Item

A stunning French 19th century white Carrara marble statue of a beautiful young maiden, signed Math Moreau. The statue is raised by a demi lune shaped tier with an elegant pedestal displaying a mottled border with a sickle and tied wheat sprigs at the base. The lovely young lady is sitting on a pedestal with her harvested wheat underneath her. She is wearing a most charming and wonderfully executed flowing dress tied with lace at the front. She also wears a beautiful bonnet which is tied at the back and hides her curly hair. A finely sculpted bird is perched on her shoulder and is eating out of the girl's hand. Lovely subject matter and wonderful proportions.

  • A Patinated Bronze Statue of a Seated Greek Scholar signed Moreau
    By Mathurin Moreau
    Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks. Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium. Several of his works remain on public display in Paris, among them on the facade of the Gare du Nord...
