French Neo-Classical St. Ormolu Statue Signed Jean Antonin Carlès

About the Item

A handsome and high quality French Turn of the Century Neo-Classical st. Ormolu and Onyx statue of Aquarius, signed Antonin Carlès, Paris 1903. This handsome statue is raised on an oval Onyx base which follows the contours of the Ormolu statue above. This young depiction of Aquarius (a.k.a. Ganymede to the Greeks) stands proudly with one hand on his hip and the other holding an Ormolu chalice. Aquarius was known for his great beauty, which is why he was brought to Olympus by Zeus to be his cup bearer for all eternity. A handsome panther, which is assigned to Aquarius in the Zodiac, lies comfortably at his feet with its tailed curled around his legs. Wonderful proportions and all original gilt throughout. The statue was awarded as a tribute to Mr. Le Lieutenant Colonel Cordier from the city of Paris in 1910. It is also known as Jeune Disciple de Bacchus, (The Young Disciple of Bacchus).
