About the Item
Also known as "The Insolent" Moriscan, Morisken, Moriscon or Moorish Dancer, this handmade and hand carved, hand painted, richly textured linden wood Morisco Dancer from the Dementz Family Deur Art Company in South Tyrol, Italy, is a fantastically detailed figure, vividly hand painted with opulent lashings of 24-karat gold leaf. An heirloom to pass down through the generations!
Large figurine is hallmarked, "OSWALD DEMETZ DEUR MADE IN ITALY".
Measures 9.25 inches tall by 6 inches wide by 5 inches deep.
Weighs 12 ounces.
The original Morisco dancers are a group of ten lime-wood sculptures, on which the original polychrome is still apparent, by the famed architect and builder Erasmus Grasser (1450-1518). They are now in the Munich city Museum. Six of the original sixteen figures have been lost. Erasmus Grasser's sixteen Morisken figures actually launched a dance style, known as "Stil der verschränkten Bewegung", or The Style of Rotational Action.
