Henry Munyaradzi Signed African Zimbabwean Shona Figurative Stone Sculpture
About the Item
A beautiful, wonderfully executed sculpture by renowned African sculptor/artist Henry Munyaradzi (1931-1998). He was also known as Henry Mudzengerere/Mzengerere) who lived and worked in Zimbabwe.
This piece is carved from serpentine stone which lends it its green coloring with splashes of yellow/lime highlights.
The work is signed with his customary incised "Henry" on the base.
Henry is best associated with the Shona sculpture movement. Though self-taught, he rose quickly to the upper echelons of Zimbabwean artists and today is widely considered one if not the County's greatest sculptors (In 1984, the Sunday Telegraph called Henry “one of the top ten sculptors in the world”). During the 1960s and 1970s, his work was shown in a number of seminal exhibitions including at the Musée Rodin (Paris), the Musée National d'Art Moderne (Paris), and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London). His solo shows include:
1968 New African Art: The Central African Workshop School, New York, USA
1971 Sculpture Contemporaine des Shonas d’Afrique, Musée Rodin, Paris, France
1978 MOMA, New York, USA
1982 Janet Fleischer Gallery, Philadelphia, USA
1984 Henry of Tengenenge, Commonwealth Institute, London
1985 Kustchatze aus Africa, Frankfurt, Germany
1985 Henry of Tengenenge, Feingarten Gallery, Los Angeles, USA
1989 Zimbabwe op de Berg, Foundation Beelden op de Berg, Wageningen, The Netherlands
1990 Contemporary Stone Carving from Zimbabwe, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK
1994 Henry of Tengenenge, Contemporary fine Art Gallery Eton, Berkshire, UK
2000 Chapungu: Custom and Legend – A Culture in Stone, Kew Gardens, UK
Today Henry's works can be found in numerous international collections and museums including four works in The British Museum, in London UK.
This work would clearly be a great addition to any figurative or modern art/sculpture collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
A heavy, solid piece.
