Hercules Holding a Coat of Arms, Flemish, XVII Century

About the Item

Hercules holding a coat of arms Flemish, XVII century White and black marble Measures: 67 x 32 x 19 cm Hercules is depicted naked, holding a coat of arms with the right hand and his club with his left hand. The child presents a high rounded forehead, full cheeks and upturned nose; curls in strong relief; hands with slender fingers and chubby legs. Monoxyl terrace adorned with a black marble cartouche. Stylistically, this already well-developed child with his plump body, chubby face and curly hair reminds the putti of Flemish artists who were active in the 17th century. The sculpture mediated a philosophical and moralizing message in agreement with the models of the Renaissance. Hercules appeared as an ethical, aesthetic and political model combining virtues, strength and balance. The present sculpture, with a sketched back was probably placed in a niche in the gallery or in the courtyard of a noble palace to glorify the owner of the house.
