About the Item
A very impressive and important Italian 19th century solid white Carrera marble statue of Jael, signed Guglielmo Baldi. The statue is raised on a Vert Antique marble base. The statue is finely executed with wonderful details and expression, and Jael inscribed on her arm band. Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, who overcame Sisera, the captain of King Jabins Caanite army. Jael was declared a hero when she killed captain Sisera and saved Israel from Jabins troops. Her heroic deed had been foretold by the prophetess Deborah, who extolled the heroine above all women in her famous Song. This statue does not depict Jael as a killer, but in the calm act of lulling Sisera with a jug of milk extended in front of her, and the instrument of his demise, a metal peg, concealed within her dress at her back. With her luxurious dress and aloof expression, Jael is firmly characterized as a formidable heroine.
