Large 18th C French Baroque Hand Carved Basswood White Painted Flower Guirlande

About the Item

Very large decorative French Baroque handcarved basswood white painted flower guirlande. Decorated with carved flowers and foliage: 4 roses, 3 lily's and a lot of leafage. Probably this was part of a bigger indoor wall decoration. The two hooks on the back make it very easy to hang it on a wall again. The Baroque followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. It used contrast, movement, exuberant detail, deep colour, grandeur, and surprise to achieve a sense of awe. The style began at the start of the 17th century in Rome, then spread rapidly to France, northern Italy, Spain, and Portugal, then to Austria, southern Germany, and Russia. In the decorative arts, the style employs plentiful and intricate ornamentation. New motifs introduced by Baroque are: the cartouche, trophies and weapons, baskets of fruit or flowers, and others, made in marquetry, stucco, or carved.

These are two magnificent carvings of large dimensions, which together make a semicircular piece with a profuse decoration also of monumental proportions of plant forms. Decoration with elaborate carved rolls, which stand out from the general structure. It comes from a Spanish church that housed an imposing altarpiece made in the second half of the 18th century. Total measurements: 450 cm (width) x 160cm (height) x 25cm (depth) Measurements of each piece (2): 225cm (width) x 160cm (height) x 25cm (depth) It is a unique opportunity to acquire two exclusive pieces in the world of antiques.
