About the Item
Wooden sculpture figuring a man by a French artist, circa 1980.
A very tall figurative sculpture made from roughly hewn birchwood. The features and details composing the character are barely suggested. However, one understands his relaxed attitude, with his hands in the pockets and his body slightly off-balanced. A knot of wood is one of his eyes whereas a crack in the trunk of the original piece of wood, represents his spine on the back.
The tactility of the sculpture and its raw materiality are emphasized by the rough marks left by the artist’s tools : the deep crevices and rugged carving marks, highlight the sculptural process as well as imbuing the figure with a primal or totem-like appearance.
