Large Woman Sculpture Patinated Bronze by Johannes Hansen, Denmark, 1940s

About the Item

Large cast bronze sculpture by Danish artist Johannes Hansen depicting a young girl lost in thoughts. The sculpture was made in the 1940s at the bronze foundry "L. Rasmussen" in Copenhagen. The calm and realistic figure is typical for Hansens work in this period. His sculptures were produced in very limited numbers as the process of bronze casting was difficult and time consuming. The metal has over time gained an amazing natural patina. Signed with artist signature ("JH") and maker ("L. Rasmussen"). Johannes Hansen (22 October 1903 in Copenhagen – 2 August 1995) was a Danish artist and sculptor. He was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, first at the School of Painting in 1921, then at the School of Sculptors 1922-1926. His debut was in 1924 at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. One of his most beloved sculptures, "Seated Young People", stands by The Lakes in Copenhagen just off Nørrebrogade and Dronning Louises Bridge. The sculpture is in bronze and granite and it was unveiled on 6 November 1942 when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Mayor of Culture Alfred Bindslev said on the occasion "two young people who sit and think about the future - with seriousness and with confidence. Many will be able to mirror their own seriousness and confidence to Life in it."
