Marble Torso of an Athlete, after the Antique, 19th Century or Earlier, Italian

About the Item

An antique Greek style fragmentary male torso in the Polykleitan tradition, from mid-leg to shoulders, depicting an adolescent male athlete with defined musculature and hairless. He stands contrapposto with the weight on his left leg. The present torso is loosely based on a figure of a young athlete, shown standing contrapposto and leaning against a tree trunk (now at the British Museum). Named after its previous owner, the sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott, it is described as a Roman copy of the 1st Century AD after a Greek original of about 430 BC. A marble torso "Westmacott type" with part of his left arm, right arm and left leg to the knee, is now at The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. The original of this marble is thought to be a lost bronze of an actual boxer, perhaps by the master sculptor Polykleitos, who was considered to be one of the greatest and most influential sculptors of the High Classical Period. He is known for his precise geometry and standards of proportion needed to create the perfect male nude. Literature: see A. Stewart, Greek Sculpture, Vol. 1, p. 14 Mounted on a new rusticated granite base.
