A very good quality late 19th century French bronze statue entitled 'Return from fishing' Signed: Math. Moreau Signed Math Moreau. Mathurin Moreau born 1822, died 1912. The eldest son of sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Moreau, and brother to Auguste and Hippolte. Math debuted at the Salon in 1848, he worked for a period of time at the foundry of Val d'Osne, and in his later years became one it's administrators. Many of his works can be seen around Paris, as he worked for Saint-Augustin and Trinite´ churches, the Opera, the palais de Justice, city hall, the Tuileries and the pavillion of Marsan at the Louvre. His smaller sculptures were of staues, statuettes and groups in pleasant decorative themes.

He was the son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau and the brother of sculptors Hippolyte and Auguste Moreau, thus part of a dynasty that significantly influenced French sculpture in the 19th century. Educated at the École des Beaux-Arts under the tutelage of Étienne-Jules Ramey and Augustin-Alexandre Dumont, Moreau went on to become a prominent figure in the French art scene. He was known for his exceptional skills in crafting bronze sculptures, which are among the most celebrated aspects of his artistic legacy. Moreau debuted at the Salon in 1848 and rapidly gained acclaim. His works often depicted allegorical figures, mythological scenes, and typical rural life, capturing both the idealistic beauty and the detailed realism that were hallmarks of the period's sculpture.
