Music and Art, Pair Antique Gilt Bronze Grand Tour Sculptures, 19th Century

About the Item

A pair of beautiful gilt bronze maidens representing Music and Art. Music holds a lyre, known for its use in Greek classical antiquity, in her left hand and is bringing her right hand forth to play the instrument with a beguiling expression. She is artistically dressed in a flowing tunic with an ornate bejeweled belt to accentuate her slim waist and buttoned to reveal a shapely leg. Art is equally appealing, if not more so, with an intricately braided hairstyle, curls cascading to the nape of her neck, she stands holding a palate and paint brushes next to a tall Grecian urn. Her off the shoulder tunic is buttoned at one arm and just held in place by a cross body sash belt. Marvelous sense of movement to both sculptures. They stand on cylindrical alabaster plinths. Condition: please note that at one time these sculptures were fitted for electricity and have slight discoloration on the back, apart from that they are in very good condition. Beautiful patina and detail.

  • Antique Large Carved Oak Figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, 18th-19th Century
    Located in New York, NY
Fine hand carved oak figure of Saint Anthony of Padua Late 18th- Early 19th Century Saint Anthony is depicted with his head raised, mouth ajar, as if in the process of speaking. He stands upright wearing his traditional Franciscan robes and holding open a book. Beautifully carved with high level of detail, unusual for oak pieces. Oak is a dense hardwood which is difficult to carve and it's rare to see this level of detail in an early oak sculpture. Saint Anthony is the Patron Saint of lost things. While living at the monastery, he had a treasured book which contained psalms and personal observations. His book was stolen by a man who decided to leave the monastery and Anthony ferverently prayed for its return as the cost of a new book would have been beyond his means. The thief repented and returned the book which is believed to be preserved at the Franciscan Library in Bologna. He is one of the most popular Catholic saints...
