Senufo Female Fertility Statue in Carved Wood, Late 19th Century

About the Item

A female fertility statue of West African Senufo (Mali, or Ivory Coast) origin in solid wood. Hand-carved from a single piece of Mango wood, this expressive figurine features notch carving and a pedestal base typical of the sophisticated work of the Senufo tribe. The type of wood used for these religious statues, being both extremely dense as well as naturally resistant to insect attack and decay, has allowed this piece to remain in excellent antique condition, reflecting closely it's original state.
