Three German Antique Iron Plaques Cast in the Renaissance Style
About the Item
This charming set of three antique German plaques are each cast from high quality 19th century iron, meaning that the detailing on them is of a very high standard. All three plaques have traces of black paint and a German label on the reverse. The scenes depicted include two Biblical images from the New Testament, including one of the Last Supper after the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and a third scene of a Classically inspired landscape with mythological creatures and natural imagery.
All three plaques are delicately rendered in the Renaissance style, which developed in the 14th and early 17th centuries in different regions across Europe. Many of the Renaissance patterns and stylistic tropes were developed from the medieval architectural designs. Stylistically, Renaissance architecture embodied a deliberate revival and development of certain elements of ancient Greek and Roman design. Importance was placed on symmetry, harmonious proportions and the regularity of parts, which resonated with the ideals of ancient classical architecture. The Renaissance period of design was preceded by Gothic architecture, the influences of which can be clearly distinguished in Renaissance style.
