Unique Midcentury Horse Bronze Relief by Mataré Student Gertrud Kortenbach

About the Item

Artist : GERTRUD KORTENBACH 1924 Solingen - 1960 Solingen Title: 'Jumping Horse' signed with monogram on front Material: Bronze, brown patina. Part. with traces of oxidation. Measurements: H. 36 cm, W. 34 cm, D. 1 cm. GERTRUD KORTENBACH was a German sculptor and painter. 1943 - 1948 she studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy together with Joseph Beuys - to the master class of the sculptor Ewald Mataré, who became her decisive supporter and inspiration. At the age of 36 she died in an accident "Gertrud Kortenbach loved the sea, animals and especially horses. [...] [These] graceful, noble and powerful animals find their way into her work [and] show in a distinctive way the development of their artistic forms of expression. [...] In the 1950s, horse sculptures in bronze and wood were created, in which there was a clear cut towards abstraction and a concentrated form." (Elbracht-Iglhaut (ed.): Perfect form. Gertrud Kortenbach (2009), p. 34). This relief also reveals strong compositional similarities to Ewald Mataré, whose master class Kortenbach attended - together with Joseph Beuys - from 1945-1948. Literature: Cf. Gisela Elbracht-Iglhaut (ed.): Perfect form. Gertrude Kortenbach. Exhibition catalog Museum Baden, Solingen (2009). Provenance: Private collection, Ruhr area.
