"Here Am I, " Highly Important Glass Panel by Edris Eckhardt
About the Item
A magnificent example of gold-fused, enameled and etched glass, "Here Am I" was created by Edris Eckhardt, one of America's most important women artists in the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. The piece illustrates one of the most poignant episodes in the Bible, where Abraham was called by God to sacrifice his own son; ready to obey until an angel stopped him, Abraham was provided a sacrificial lamb instead. The panel incorporates gold leaf fused between layers of glass, plus painted enamel and etched details on the surface. The panel is mounted on its original walnut light box, so that areas of the glass that were etched by the artist emit a rich red light, highlighting Abraham's outreached arms, and the hands of God.
Eckhardt was a friend and contemporary of Viktor Schreckengost, and was primarily known for ceramic sculpture in the 1930s and 1940s. After World War II, she pioneered a number of advances in glass art, winning two Guggenheim Awards and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship in the 1950s. This piece is signed and dated 1964.
