Georges Despret Rare Decorative Plate in Glass Paste

About the Item

Exceptional and rare plate in glass paste by Georges Despret. Jade-colored background, flesh-colored child and blond hair. In very good condition and electrified. A cooking stress at the knee is to be reported. Plaque : Width: 17.8cm Height: 46cm Frame: Width: 23cm Height: 51cm Georges DESPRET (1862-1952), a native of Binche (Belgium), developed a glass paste technique at the same time as Henry Cros without knowing anything about his work. Both worked on their side and never met. After studying engineering in Liège, he was called to the management of the Glacerie de Jeumont in France. He gave a strong impetus to the company and expanded it by acquiring Glaceries de Boussois in 1903. His business became considerable, producing 4 tons of glass per day in the form of mirrors, mirrors, slabs and glass paste coating. … Glass paste, its Ingres violin! Georges Despret researches the secret of making legendary vases. He manages to obtain a semi-transparent material with which he models small sculptures with subtle gradients. He offers an important collection of his works to the Municipal Museum of Jeumont. But the 1914-1918 war destroyed this museum and seriously damaged its factories. Too busy restructuring his business, Georges Despret abandoned the manufacture of molten glass. Those who have survived the disasters are very rare. Almost all unsigned.
