Metallic Meteorite Var, Pallasite Mineral Specimen, Magadan District, Russia

About the Item

Pallasites are a rare subclass of meteorite that are primarily composed of an iron-nickel matrix (host-rock) and olivine crystals. (Many are familiar with olivine in its gemstone form, peridot.) Only 61 pallasite falls are known to date, with 10 being from Antarctica. Each pallasite fall has left specimens of varying quality, from void skeletal masses to rarer, olivine-filled pieces such as this attractive example. This pallasite has been cut and polished to reveal a core of metallic iron-nickel and radiant olivine crystals. When lit, the olivine illuminates with a yellow-olive glow like stained glass. Notably, the vast majority of pallasite specimens are cut into slices and then cut again a few times to create smaller, more saleable pieces. This slice is a complete cross section that retains its natural edges, giving it a beautiful dichotomy between its coarse, burnt edges and the sheen and brilliance of the polished face and shimmering crystals. Its constellation of olivine crystals is a wonderful reminder of how this meteorite journeyed through space and burned through out atmosphere as a token from beyond our world. This piece comes with a bespoke stand. Item reference: #15316
