Septarian on Custom Made Metal Base
About the Item
Cut and polished to reveal internal calcite and aragonite structures, supported on fitted custom stand.
Septarian nodules or clay spheres occur because calcite in liquid form has penetrated the cracks and crevices of the clay. The expansion during solidification pushed the clay apart, as it were. During the petrifaction that followed, the yellow calcite partially dissolved and disappeared, creating the spaces.
The complete origin story of these concretions is still unclear. One theory is that the fossilization of a mollusk is at the basis of them. We also know ammonites (housings of squids) found in such nodules.
This specimen comes from the Antwerp clay pits. This site shows a strongly layered alternation of loamy clays, rich in minerals such as calcite, pyrite and glauconite. Sometimes in these layers the septarian nodules occur, the largest of which are up to two meters in size. Because the nodules are often full of cracks, sawing and polishing them is a challenge. A flawless, unbroken specimen like this one is therefore a lot rarer.
