Large Antique Turkish Middle Eastern Copper Hammered Water Pot. Antique 19th century middle Eastern tinned copper ewer. Nice decorative old rustic hand-hammered ewer in the Mameluke style. Antique large and heavy with great patina, 19th century Great decorative collector middle eastern Arabic Islamic art metalwork. Hand forged and hammered metal tinned copper container with lid. Middle Eastern Moorish Arabic tinned copper jug ewer which was used for storing liquids probably water or milk. Rustic, with strap handle and chained cap, hammered design around neck and hand etched detailing on neck and top part of the body while the rest of the piece is completely hand hammered with thick copper. It has a chain connecting the lid to the body of the piece. Originally designed so they wouldn't loose the lid. The jug can be opened and closed at the top using a lid secured by a small chain. Dimensions: Height: 21 in (53.34 cm)Diameter: 12 in (30.48 cm). Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used all over the world for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing food, not only because they were durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, subtle geometric patterns on the neck, and fitted, "compound" dome lid all reference Spanish Arab design traditions. Around the center of the jug at its widest point, and vertically below its handle, can be seen a geometric, gold colored, zigzagging line. This is a seam where two pieces of copper have been brazed together. Often referred to as a ‘dovetail’ (more correctly a ‘cramped’ or ‘castellated’ joint) this seam was a time-consuming hand process, and demonstrates a fair level of skill and craftsmanship. Great piece of Islamic metalwork to add to any country decor, Bohemian, Moroccan room, rustic or modern.
