Pair of Blue Opaline Perfume Bottles Decorated by Desvignes
About the Item
Pair of blue opaline perfume bottles with their ball-shaped stoppers. A rose and gilded petals decorates the tops of the stoppers, and gold bands highlight the necks of the bottles. Each bottle features gold bands that frame a ring of gold and dark blue roses, anemones, and forget-me-nots. The delicate decoration is typical of Jean-Baptiste Desvignes’s 1820s production. During this time, Jean-Baptiste Desvignes found a way to paint on opaline crystal and glass. He used only vegetable-based colors that he affixed to the opaline crystal. The tones, always matte, were limited to dark blue and red. The gilding dominated, using patterns of palmettes, flowers, and garlands.
